Introduction to Machine Learning techniques and their applications in condensed matter

Machine learning (ML) is still a hot topic in various fields of physics. A general classification of ML techniques distinguishes supervised learning (SL), unsupervised learning (UL) and reinforcement learning (RL). During the lecture, a brief general introduction to ML techniques will be given and examples of applications of all three methods will be presented. In particular, I will demonstrate (i) how to use SL to distinguish between continuous and discontinuous phase transitions in several statistical physics models, (ii) how to use UL to perform analytic continuation and, in general, how to solve ill-posed inverse problems, and (iii) how to use RL to optimise ground-state configurations in spin models.
