On June 14, the second edition of the conference titled "Poznań Science Slam" will take place at the Faculty of Biology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. This event will enable science enthusiasts and young science students from all over Poland to develop their interests and create a unique opportunity to present their own research, analyses and innovations.

Our Institute took honorary patronage over this unique conference. The winner of the special prize will be able to take part in this year's Scientific Workshops “Summer with Helium".

We invite you to participate in free scientific events organized by the TYGIEL Foundation. As part of this series, on June 11 at 10:00 AM, Dr. Iwona Płowaś-Korus from our Institute will lead a webinar entitled “Science without borders: how to independently navigate the path from idea to international partnership.” During the session, practical tools will be presented to help you start an international scientific career – regardless of your current level of experience.

We are pleased to inform that Dr. hab. Andrzej Łapiński, prof. IMP PAS, by the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, received the title of professor of natural sciences in the discipline of physical sciences.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Eng. Sylwia Zięba has been awarded the prestigious Bekker NAWA Scholarship. This program supports the international mobility of researchers, enabling them to conduct research at leading scientific centres around the world. The scholarship offers a unique opportunity for career development and international research collaboration. Dr. Zięba will carry out her postdoctoral research at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, where she will work on the project titled “Proton-phonon coupling in imidazole salts as a key to switching physical phenomena”.

We are very pleased to announce that in the 27th edition of the OPUS competition, Dr. Piotr Graczyk's project entitled “Charge-mediated magneto-electric effects for wireless applications” has received the National Science Centre (NCN) funding (1.549.120 PLN) – read more about the project.

The grant application was evaluated in the ST3 (Condensed Phase Physics) panel, where 6 proposals received funding out of the 30 submitted.

Under the OPUS-27 competition, NCN funding was also granted to the project entitled “Interaction of magnetorheological elastomer with magnetic materials in soft robotics application”. The project will be carried out in the consortium with the Poznań University of Technology (Faculty of Automatic Control, Robotics and Electrical Engineering); coordinator at IMP PAS: Dr. hab. Karol Synoradzki. The grant application was evaluated in the ST7 (Systems Engineering) panel – read more about the project.

On 17 October 2024, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Poznań Branch of the Polish Physical Society (OP PTF). The ceremony was a great celebration of the physics community from Poznań. This unique event was honoured by the presence of the President of the OP PTF - Prof. Teresa Rząca-Urban and by the speeches of eminent scientists connected with Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poznań University of Technology, Poznań University of Life Sciences, and the Institute of Molecular Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The event was attended by young physics entrants (PhD students, undergraduates, and members of scientific societies), as well as physics teachers and many schoolchildren. The latter were able to participate in a number of interesting demonstrations prepared by the staff and doctoral students from various research centres, including scientists from the IMP PAS.

We would like to thank Prof. IMP PAS Andrzej Łapiński (the President of the OP PTF) and the entire Organising Committee, headed by Mikołaj Baranowski (the Member of the Council of the OP PTF), for their efforts in organising the event.

This year's Nobel Prize winners in Physics are John J. Hopfield (physicist of Polish origin) and Geoffrey E. Hinton (computer scientist) for discoveries and inventions enabling machine learning using artificial neural networks - the announcement.

At the IMP PAS, the research project entitled “Searching for free rare earth and rare earth free permanent magnets using machine learning” is conducted by Dr. hab. Mirosław Waerwiński, prof. IMP PAS. In this project, one of the tasks concerns the use of machine learning algorithms. Based on a prepared database, a practical model will be developed to predict new permanent magnets - read more about the project.

On August 29, 2024, a ceremonial presentation of nominations to new members of the Academy of Young Scientists of the Polish Academy of Sciences (AMU PAS) took place at the Palace in Jabłonna near Warsaw. Our researcher Dr. Krzysztof Ptaszyński took part in the ceremony.

We warmly congratulate Dr. Ptaszyński on his appointment to AMU PAS and we wish him fruitful work. The choice, made by the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences, honours the Doctor's previous successes and scientific achievements.

Congratulations to the scientists from the Department of Thin Films and Nanostructures (Daniel Kiphart, Feliks Stobiecki and Piotr Kuświk), who will conduct a study at the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS on ferrimagnetic layered systems structured by a focused ion beam. The allocation of research time was decided by an international committee, which highly appreciated the application of our employees, emphasizing the innovative nature of the planned research. The use of the SOLARIS infrastructure will be free of charge for our Institute and the obtained results will allow for a more complete explanation of the process of patterning magnetic domains without domain walls in structured ferrimagnetic systems.
