Conference details

New materials for magnetoelectronics 2007

Topic

Session I: Magnetic oxides and intermetallics

Session II: Surfaces, interfaces, films and layered structures

On-going miniaturization in opto-, magneto- electronics makes the multilayered thin film structures and magnetic nanostructures the most attractive and intensively investigated ones among magnetic materials. Large contribution of atoms placed at the surfaces and interfaces induce novel properties not encountered in the bulk materials. Surface sensitive techniques (e.g. diffraction techniques, primary and secondary particles spectroscopies, scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy) as well as the rising knowledge on self-organizing phenomena enable engineering of the surface/interface properties down to atomic scale. The proximity effects typical of layered structures result in a coupling of adjacent layers, also via nonmagnetic spacer.

Presentation of the recent results, concerning widely understood thin film magnetic structures and nanostructures is the aim of this session. The following topics are included in its scope:
  • structure and possible modifications of the surfaces
  • growth modes of thin film (layered) structures
  • magnetic anisotropy and methods of its modification
  • domain structures
  • interlayer coupling
  • electronic (spin resolved) transport - TMR, GMR

Session III: Quantum transport and quantum computing

Both the invited lectures and contributed talks will be concerned with the different aspects of control and manipulation of the electron spin in nanostructures. An electron in a quantum dot gives a very natural two-level system needed for quantum computation. Quantum dots can be used to localize and address single spins using either electrical or optical methods.

The optical spin control, current-induced motion of a domain wall, theoretical discussion of spin polarized transport ( spin valves, spin filters, magnetoresistance of carbon nanotubes ) are only some examples of the topics which will be reviewed on this session. For deeper understanding of the fundamentals of molecular electronics also some ab initio electron energy structure calculations will be presented.
